When we get out of the glass bottle of our ego and when we escape like the squirrels in the cage of our personality and get into the forest again, we shall shiver with cold and fright. But things will happen to us so that we don’t know ourselves. Cool, unlying life will rush in.

Wonderful to go out on a frozen road. . . . Wonderful the bluish, cold air, and things standing up in cold distance. . . . I am so glad, on this lonely naked road, I don’t know what to do with myself. . . . It is all so familiar to my feet, my very feet in contact, that I am wild as if I had made a discovery.

Don’t have ideas about places, just because you’re not in them. All places are tough and terrestrial.

I wish I were going to Thibet – or Kamschatka – or Tahiti – to the ultima, ultima, ultima Thule. I feel sometimes I shall go mad, because there is nowhere to go.
