Sophia Dembling — Yearning for Faraway Places

Some people, I suppose, use the anonymity of travel to pretend they are something they are not. They even tell tales. But stripped of the trappings of home, I think we actually become the essence of ourselves. With nothing familiar behind which to hide, we are left completely to the resources the live only within us. The brave are at their bravest, the fearful confront their timidity. We are different people when we travel because there is no other time when we are so utterly ourselves. It is both terrifying and refreshing and always, always, enlightening.
